Ansouis is a medieval village in the Luberon, situated 48 km (30 miles) from Cavaillon, à 37 km (23 miles) from Aix en Provence and 65 km (40 miles) from Marseilles. The Aix-en Provence TGV (high-speed) train station is 50 kms (31 miles) away.
Ansouis’s tourist sites include the following:
- its XIIth century medieval castle, a historic site and monument,
- its Xiith century churches,
- the so-called ‘musée extraordinaire’ (Extraordinary Museum) situated in a typical Provencal building with vaulting from the Middle Ages (sculptures, paintings, pottery),
- its craft shops (pottery, santonnier – santons are traditional Provencal crib figures made out of pottery – etc.).
In fact, the Ansouis santonnier (maker of santons) was awarded the title of Best Worker in France in 2010.
